Toasty, Melty, Perfect: The Ultimate Turkey Ham and Cheese Sliders

Imagine warm, fluffy rolls, generously filled with savory ham, tender turkey, and a cascade of gooey, melted cheese. Topped with a golden, buttery crust, these Turkey Ham and Cheese Sliders are more than just a snack; they’re a celebration in every bite. Exceptionally easy to prepare and incredibly fun to devour, they’ve earned their place as a go-to favorite for countless gatherings, from casual family lunches to lively game day parties.
Why Sliders Are Always a Winning Idea
Sliders possess an undeniable charm. Their mini size makes them effortlessly appealing, perfect for grabbing on the go without the commitment of a full-sized sandwich. This recipe for hot turkey and ham sliders transforms simple ingredients into an irresistible treat, ideal for any event where good food and good company are paramount. Whether you’re hosting friends for a watch party, packing a convenient lunch, or looking for a crowd-pleasing appetizer, these toasty, melty delights are guaranteed to be a hit.
I recall a Dr. Seuss-themed birthday party where green egg and ham sliders were a must-have for the adventurous eaters. However, knowing that some guests might be a little hesitant about the vibrant green eggs, I wanted to ensure there was a universally loved option. That’s where these classic turkey ham and cheese sliders stepped in. They offered a comforting, familiar alternative that appeased every palate, becoming the perfect complementary dish to a more whimsical menu.
The beauty of these sliders lies not just in their taste but also in their incredible convenience. You can assemble them entirely ahead of time, store them in the refrigerator, and simply pop them in the oven when you’re ready to serve. This make-ahead capability is a game-changer for entertaining, allowing you to enjoy your guests without being tethered to the kitchen. For that Dr. Seuss party, I whipped up a triple batch of these classic sliders right alongside the green ones. Thankfully, a triple batch fits perfectly on a half sheet pan, and two such pans nestled comfortably in the oven. The result? An oven overflowing with deliciousness, ready to delight everyone!

The Art of Simple Perfection: Why Less Is More
Assembling these sliders, I confess I was tempted to “fancy them up” with extra toppings or gourmet twists. However, I quickly realized that any elaborate addition might risk alienating those same guests who preferred a more traditional option over the green eggs. Sometimes, sticking to the classics is the best strategy, and with these sliders, simple truly is superior.
There’s nothing particularly complex or groundbreaking about this recipe, yet its simplicity allows each individual flavor to shine brilliantly. The foundation begins with soft, slightly sweet Hawaiian rolls, which become beautifully golden and buttery on top after baking. Inside, the savory notes of thinly sliced ham and turkey are perfectly complemented by a generous layer of gooey, melted cheese. Each component, while humble on its own, comes together in a symphony of flavors and textures, creating a sandwich that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
The universal appeal of these sliders was perfectly illustrated the day after the party. A neighbor kid, having worked up a serious appetite playing at our house, eagerly devoured one I warmed up for him. He was so impressed that he immediately asked for the ingredients to see if his gram could replicate it. Of course, I warmed him up another one! All 72 sliders, made in that triple batch, vanished within a day, a testament to their deliciousness even with a plethora of other party foods available.
So, the next time you’re searching for an exciting snack, a convenient lunch solution, or the perfect tailgate treat, be sure to prepare a batch (or three!) of these irresistible hot ham and turkey sliders. Easy Variations to Make These Sliders Your Own
One of the most delightful aspects of this slider recipe is its incredible adaptability. It serves as a fantastic canvas for culinary creativity, allowing you to easily adjust it to suit your preferences or what you have on hand.
- All Ham or All Turkey: While the combination of turkey and ham is fantastic, feel free to simplify. We often make just hot ham and cheese sliders, simply using more ham and omitting the turkey. The same principle applies if you prefer an all-turkey version.
- Cheese Choices: Don’t limit yourself to mozzarella! Slices of provolone, Colby-Jack, sharp cheddar, or Swiss cheese all make fabulous alternatives. Sliced cheeses also tend to stay put a bit better on the sandwich, making for neater bites. Experiment to find your favorite melty cheese companion!
- Flavorful Spreads: The mayonnaise base is versatile. Sometimes, we stir a touch of Dijon mustard into the mayonnaise before spreading it over the rolls for an extra layer of tangy flavor. For a bolder kick, a bit of garlic salt mixed into the melted butter brushed on top can elevate the entire experience.
- Sweet & Savory Twists: For those who enjoy a more sophisticated flavor profile, consider adding dried cranberries (craisins) and a touch of pesto to your sliders, drawing inspiration from delicious recipes like Tish’s tasty turkey grilled cheese sliders. This recipe truly encourages you to experiment and make it uniquely yours!
- Beyond Sliders: If you love handheld stuffed sandwiches, you might also enjoy my simplified runzas (also known as bierocks), which feature a savory filling encased in a buttery bread shell.
If you discover an out-of-this-world combination, please share it! I’m always eager to try new variations. Let me know in the comments section or connect with me on social media!

Cook time: 25 mins
Total time: 40 mins
Equipment
- PYREX 3QT Glass Baking Dish Cover 9×13″
- Libbey Small Glass Bowls with Lids
Ingredients
- 12 dinner rolls (Hawaiian rolls are highly recommended for their subtle sweetness)
- 3-4 Tablespoons mayonnaise or your favorite sandwich spread
- ½ pound thin sliced ham
- 1 pound thin sliced turkey
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1-2 Tablespoons butter, melted
- ½ teaspoon Dijon Mustard
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking pan. Carefully slice the dinner rolls horizontally through the middle, separating the tops from the bottoms. Place the bottom halves of the rolls evenly in the prepared baking pan.
- Generously spread the mayonnaise or your chosen sandwich spread over the bottom halves of the rolls.
- Layer the ham and turkey slices evenly over the mayonnaise. Then, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the meat layers. Carefully place the top halves of the rolls over the cheese and meat.
- In a small bowl, melt the butter and stir in the Dijon mustard until well combined. Brush this butter-mustard mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls.
- Cover the baking pan tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for another 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbly, and the tops of the rolls are lightly golden brown and toasted.
Notes
- Make Ahead Tip: These sliders are perfect for meal prepping! You can assemble them up to a day in advance and refrigerate them. When ready to bake, follow the instructions as usual, adding a few extra minutes to the covered baking time if baking from cold.
- Extra Flavor Boost: For a more pronounced mustard flavor, consider stirring 1 Tablespoon of Dijon mustard (or even a zesty honey mustard) into the mayonnaise or Miracle Whip before spreading it onto the rolls.
