Picture yourself enjoying a bowl of this magnificent oatmeal every weekend throughout the autumn season. It’s the perfect ritual to embrace the cooler weather and start your day feeling grounded and energized. We recently shared a generous batch with family during a large breakfast gathering, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Guests were not just reaching for seconds—they were actively asking for more oatmeal, even with numerous other delicious options available! This speaks volumes about its undeniable appeal and delicious taste. Even our ‘Little Dude’ couldn’t get enough, requesting warmed-up leftovers for an evening snack and then again for breakfast the next morning. It quickly became clear that preparing a larger batch is a brilliant strategy for ensuring easy, wholesome breakfasts all week long.

Why Choose Steel Cut Oats?

While various types of oats exist, steel cut oats stand out for several reasons. Unlike rolled or instant oats, steel cut oats are whole oat groats that have been cut into two or three smaller pieces, rather than being steamed and flattened. This minimal processing preserves their distinct, chewy texture and nutty flavor, which is a significant part of their appeal. They absorb liquids more slowly, resulting in a creamier interior and a delightful resistance to the bite that holds up well, even as leftovers. From a nutritional standpoint, steel cut oats tend to have a lower glycemic index, meaning they release energy more slowly, providing sustained fullness and energy throughout your morning. They are an excellent source of soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar, making them a heart-healthy choice. For a truly satisfying and wholesome breakfast, steel cut oats are the superior option.

Optimal Storage Solutions

One of the many benefits of this apple cinnamon steel cut oatmeal is how wonderfully it stores and reheats. Cooked steel cut oats maintain their integrity and flavor, making them perfect for meal prepping. Simply transfer any cooled leftovers into an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. This means you can enjoy a wholesome, delicious breakfast even on the busiest of mornings.

Reheating is a breeze. For a single serving, a quick 45-second zap in the microwave is usually all it takes to achieve a warm, comforting bowl of oatmeal. If you find the consistency a little too thick, feel free to add a splash of water, apple juice, or milk to reach your desired creaminess before heating.

For longer storage, cooked steel cut oatmeal can also be frozen. Divide individual servings into freezer-safe containers or bags and freeze for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, simply add a splash of water, apple juice, or milk and microwave for approximately 2 minutes, stirring halfway through. In mere moments, a nourishing and flavorful breakfast will be ready to power your day.

Helpful Tips and Tricks for Perfect Apple Pie Oatmeal

If you’re eager to embrace the flavors of fall and kickstart your day with a truly satisfying meal, this apple pie steel cut oats recipe is tailor-made for you. While steel cut oats do require a bit more cooking time compared to their instant counterparts, the effort involved is minimal, and the reward is absolutely worth it.

To expedite the cooking process, a smart trick is to soak your steel cut oats overnight. Simply combine the oats with the required liquid (apple juice and water, as per the recipe) in your refrigerator before you go to bed. This overnight soak can shave approximately 10 minutes off the morning cook time, making it even faster to get your breakfast on the table. Alternatively, for those truly pressed for time, opting for quick-cooking steel cut oats can also reduce the simmering duration without completely sacrificing that signature hearty texture.

I personally find great joy in the entire process, from the anticipation of the wonderful aroma filling my kitchen as the oats simmer to the moment the timer signals that breakfast is ready. It’s a small, meditative ritual that provides something delightful to look forward to as you begin your day.

Enhancing the Apple Experience

To truly maximize the apple flavor in your steel cut oatmeal, consider the type of apples you use. While any apple will work, firm, tart varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji hold their shape well during cooking and offer a bright counterpoint to the sweetness. You can also experiment with a mix of apples for a more complex flavor profile. Dicing the apple into small, uniform pieces ensures even cooking and integrates the fruit seamlessly into every bite. For an extra boost of apple goodness, you might even add a tablespoon of apple butter alongside the applesauce. The goal is to create a multi-layered apple experience that mirrors the richness of a homemade apple pie.

Customizing Your Apple Cinnamon Steel Cut Oatmeal

While this Apple Cinnamon Steel Cut Oatmeal is perfect as is, it also serves as an excellent canvas for customization. Consider adding a handful of toasted pecans or walnuts for an extra layer of crunch and nutty flavor, or a sprinkle of dried cranberries for a touch of tartness. A dollop of Greek yogurt or a drizzle of heavy cream can add a delightful creaminess. For those who enjoy an even richer spice profile, a pinch of allspice or a touch of ground ginger can further enhance the “apple pie” essence. Don’t be afraid to experiment with toppings to make this breakfast uniquely yours. A little extra honey or maple syrup can also be added at the end for those who prefer a sweeter bowl.

  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • cups apple juice or cider
  • cups water
  • 1 apple diced
  • teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 dash grated nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 Tablespoon honey or to taste
  • optional: additional apple slices and/or pecans for serving

Instructions

  • Combine the steel cut oatmeal, applesauce, apple juice, water, diced apple, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat and then reduce to a simmer and cover.
    1 cup steel cut oatmeal,
    1 cup unsweetened applesauce,

    1 apple,
    1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon,

  • Simmer for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally and scraping the bottom of the pot to prevent burning. Add a little more liquid as you go if it looks like it’s needed to achieve your desired consistency.
